Terms of Reference

1.    Purpose

The purpose of the BVS advisory committee is to be a forum that represents academic users of BVS facilities across the university where procedural, legislative, financial and estates matters can be discussed, advice provided to the BVS management team and information fed back to users.

This includes (but is not limited to) the following areas;

    1. To support BVS management and the Animal welfare and Ethical Review Bodies in engagement with the 3Rs and fostering a Culture of Care across all facilities
    2. To consider and advise BVS management on proposed procedural or staffing changes
    3. To consider and advise BVS management on matters relating to legislative compliance, particularly relating to Home Office and Health and Safety
    4. To consider and advise BVS management on financial planning including best use of any contingency and requests for bridging support
    5. To consider and advise BVS management on estates planning where relevant to this committee
    6. To communicate any issues (in advance of meetings) from different areas represented and feedback to these areas after the meetings. 
2.    Membership and terms
    1. Convener/Chair Senior Professor and experienced user of facilities
    2. Director of Corporate Services Group and Establishment Licence Holder
    3. Director of Bioresearch and Veterinary Services
    4. Deputy Director of Bioresearch and Veterinary Services (Facilities)
    5. Deputy Director of Bioresearch and Veterinary Services (Finance)
    6. CSG Management Accountant
    7. Academic Representatives of IGMM WGH (BRF and Evans)
    8. Academic Representative of The Roslin Institute
    9. Academic Representatives of College of Science and Engineering (Kings Buildings/SCRM)
    10. Academic Representatives of College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine (Little France Chancellors and SCRM also Central area HRB and 1GS)
    11. Academic Representative of aquatics users QMRI facilities
    12. Term – this is not fixed but membership will be reviewed on an annual basis recognising that some continuity is beneficial

3.       Frequency of Meetings

3.1 The BVS advisory committee will meet three times each year

4.    Reporting

    1. Minutes from each meeting will be provided to committee members and heads of school, colleges and institutes
    2. Minutes will be posted on the BVS web pages
